Fuel for the Tank

Many of us have heard the classic old saying “you can’t run off an empty tank,” usually in the context of being tired and exhausted from life circumstances. However, this applies to running in a HUGE way!

It is the beginning of the new year and spring races are already here. As training is taking place, it is time for those weekend long runs. Sometimes the middle of those long runs can feel daunting and underwhelming. I know I have asked myself many times “why did I sign up for that half marathon?” It does not have to feel this way!

There is a little trick to getting through that midway slump of long runs… nutrition. Many people pass up nutrition selections in stores as it seems daunting to try something new or the thought of “does this little packet that says energy gel actually work?”

Indeed, those small little packets work to help you sustain energy and carbs throughout your long run. As there are many different forms of nutrition to try — gels, waffles, syrups, drink mixes, etc. — it takes quite a bit of trial and error to figure out what you like and what you need during exercise. Most nutrition recommendations are to take 1 before you go and 1 every 40-45 minutes during vigorous workouts.

Why should we try nutrition?

Well, we can only run so far before our body is depleted of carbohydrates. Carbs are our body’s main energy source during physical activity. The depletion of carbohydrates quickly lead us to hitting “the wall.” Just like we fill up our cars to travel, if we are running a fair distance, we should properly fuel our tank and give our bodies the tools necessary for success. Though shorter activities may not require nutrition, if you’re training for in a half-marathon, full marathon, or any kind of long distance, I suggest planning on using sport nutrition. Because there are many options to choose from, it will probably require trial-and-error to find out which brand and style works best for you! That being said, our staff would be happy to give some recommendations and offer advice. we always have plenty of options in stock at Terra Running.

My personal favorites to keep in the running vest are Huma energy gels (as these are made with a chia seed base and feels like a little desert while running), Stroopwaffels, and Skratch energy chews. For electrolytes, I prefer Skratch (pineapple or lemon-lime flavor) or Nuun (Tropical flavor). Just remember, it is safer to just try out different options while training until you narrow down what you like best and what does and does not work for you! It is always better to try something in training instead of during a race and regretting it later.

If you have any questions or do not know where to begin, do not fret, our entire staff at Terra Running Company can help give suggestions and guide you through the nutrition wall!
